Studying Medicine in the UK is a longer and more expensive commitment than most other subjects on this site, and it comes with its own registration chain — so it deserves a closer look before you apply.
The standard route is a 5-year undergraduate MBBS/MBChB, delivered jointly by a medical school and NHS teaching hospitals, so clinical placements begin within the degree itself rather than after it. A small number of universities offer accelerated 4-year graduate-entry programmes for students who already hold a science degree.

Admission Criteria for MBBS
Medical school is the most competitive undergraduate admission on this site — UK universities weigh academics, the UCAT, your personal statement and (often) clinical work experience together, not academics alone.
- Class 12 aggregate: Competitive applicants typically need 90%+ (CBSE/ICSE/State boards), with strong Chemistry and Biology results specifically.
- Required subjects: Chemistry and Biology are expected at nearly every medical school; Physics and/or Mathematics are required by some — check your specific shortlist.
- Admissions test — UCAT: The University Clinical Aptitude Test is used by nearly all UK medical schools for admissions screening. The BMAT has been discontinued by its administering body. A small number of universities may use a school-specific alternative — confirm directly with your shortlisted universities.
- IELTS Academic: Often 7.0 – 7.5 for Medicine, frequently with a minimum of 7.0 in each band — noticeably higher than most other subjects, since strong communication is safety-critical in clinical training.
- PTE Academic: approximately 67 – 76 (indicative equivalent — confirm your target university's own conversion table).
- TOEFL iBT: approximately 95 – 105 (indicative equivalent).
- Duolingo English Test: accepted by only a limited number of medical schools — IELTS or OET is the safer default to prepare for Medicine specifically.

- Academic transcripts and certificates — Class 10 and Class 12, with Chemistry/Biology marks clearly shown.
- UCAS personal statement — for Medicine, this carries real weight: admissions tutors specifically look for evidence of why you want to practise medicine, not just strong grades.
- Clinical or care work experience — shadowing a doctor, hospital volunteering, or care-home work is widely expected by UK medical schools and is often referenced directly in your personal statement and any interview.
- UCAT score — sat and reported before you submit your UCAS application.
- 1–2 letters of recommendation (academic or from a clinical supervisor, where relevant).
- Valid passport
Some medical schools also interview shortlisted candidates (individually or via a multiple mini-interview format) — confirm whether this applies to your target universities well ahead of the application deadline.
NEET is not required for UK admission
NEET is an Indian regulatory requirement, not a UK admissions one — it is not needed to be admitted to a UK MBBS programme. It becomes relevant only if and when the graduate wants to register to practise medicine in India, described in the registration pathway below.
Is a UK MBBS Valid in India?
A UK MBBS and an Indian MBBS work as two separate, one-directional recognitions rather than an automatic equivalence. Here is what a UK-trained graduate needs to do to practise in each country.
- Complete the UK MBBS/MBChB degree
The standard 5–6 year undergraduate route, or a 4-year accelerated graduate-entry programme.
- Obtain General Medical Council (GMC) registration
Required to practise medicine anywhere in the UK, including the foundation training year.
- To practise in India, sit the National Exit Test (NExT)
This is the mechanism by which the National Medical Commission currently assesses foreign medical graduates, including those trained in the UK. This exam has been phased and revised, so reconfirm the exact current name/process closer to your graduation date.
