LLM in the UK: Overview

An LLM (Master of Laws) is a one-year postgraduate law degree, and the UK's common-law tradition makes it a natural choice for Indian law graduates who want to specialise.

The most commonly chosen specialisations are Commercial and Corporate Law, Intellectual Property Law, International Law and, increasingly, Technology/AI Law. Because the LLM is only one year long, it lets working professionals or recent law graduates add a globally recognised specialisation without a long career break.

Admission Criteria for LLM

UK universities assess LLM applications holistically โ€” academic record, English proficiency and supporting documents together. Requirements vary by university and by how competitive the specific programme is, so treat the ranges below as a starting point for your own target list, not a universal cutoff.

  • Degree: An LLB or an equivalent recognised law degree.
  • Classification: Most competitive LLM programmes (Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, UCL, KCL) expect a First Class or strong Upper Second (2:1) result.
  • Wider entry: A small number of universities, such as Bristol, will consider a Second Class (2:2) on a case-by-case basis.
  • Non-law graduates: A handful of universities offer a conversion-friendly LLM or ask for relevant professional experience if your first degree wasn't in law โ€” confirm on a university-by-university basis, as this isn't standard.

Planning to qualify as a solicitor in England & Wales?

Most Indian LLM graduates use the degree for corporate legal, in-house counsel or international law roles rather than for UK court practice. Those planning to qualify as a solicitor instead sit the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), which several universities now offer as an integrated LLM add-on.

Bar Council of India (BCI) Recognition

Not every UK LLM is automatically recognised by the Bar Council of India for practice back in India. If returning to practise in India matters to you, check your target university's current BCI recognition status directly before applying.

Fee ranges above are indicative 2026/27 estimates compiled for planning purposes โ€” always confirm the exact, current-year figure on the university's own admissions page before budgeting or applying.

How to Apply for an LLM

Postgraduate LLM applications go directly through each university's own online portal โ€” there is no UCAS-style shared system for LLM courses.

  • Research and shortlist (12โ€“18 months prior)

Identify programmes, confirm entry requirements, and prepare for any required entrance test.

  • Prepare documents (8โ€“12 months prior)

Draft your Statement of Purpose, request references, and update your CV.

  • Submit your application

Postgraduate applicants apply directly through each university's own online portal; undergraduate applicants apply through UCAS.

  • Receive your offer

A conditional offer (subject to meeting final academic or test conditions) or an unconditional offer.

  • Accept and pay your deposit

Accepting your offer and paying any tuition deposit triggers your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) โ€” the document you need for your visa application.

  • Apply for your Student visa

Using your CAS reference. See our dedicated UK Visa Consultants page for the full process.

LLM in the UK โ€” FAQs

An LLM alone doesn't grant Indian practising rights โ€” you would still need to meet the Bar Council of India's requirements. Most Indian LLM graduates instead use the degree for corporate legal, in-house counsel, or international roles that don't require Indian court enrolment.

No โ€” the SQE is only needed if you specifically want to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales after your LLM. Several universities offer it as an optional add-on to the standard one-year LLM.

Some universities, such as Bristol, will consider a Second Class (2:2) degree, though most competitive LLM programmes ask for an Upper Second (2:1) or above. Your specific university and programme's published entry criteria are the ones that matter.

This depends heavily on your specialisation, employer and location, and isn't something this page can respond with a reliable figure for โ€” a BrainEdge counsellor can talk you through realistic outcomes for your specific target universities and practice area.
