LLM in the UK: Overview
An LLM (Master of Laws) is a one-year postgraduate law degree, and the UK's common-law tradition makes it a natural choice for Indian law graduates who want to specialise.
The most commonly chosen specialisations are Commercial and Corporate Law, Intellectual Property Law, International Law and, increasingly, Technology/AI Law. Because the LLM is only one year long, it lets working professionals or recent law graduates add a globally recognised specialisation without a long career break.

Admission Criteria for LLM
UK universities assess LLM applications holistically — academic record, English proficiency and supporting documents together. Requirements vary by university and by how competitive the specific programme is, so treat the ranges below as a starting point for your own target list, not a universal cutoff.
- Degree: An LLB or an equivalent recognised law degree.
- Classification: Most competitive LLM programmes (Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, UCL, KCL) expect a First Class or strong Upper Second (2:1) result.
- Wider entry: A small number of universities, such as Bristol, will consider a Second Class (2:2) on a case-by-case basis.
- Non-law graduates: A handful of universities offer a conversion-friendly LLM or ask for relevant professional experience if your first degree wasn't in law — confirm on a university-by-university basis, as this isn't standard.
- IELTS Academic: 6.5 – 7.0 is typical for LLM programmes (some competitive courses ask for 7.0+, often with no band below 6.5).
- PTE Academic: approximately 62 – 69 (indicative equivalent — confirm your target university's own conversion table).
- TOEFL iBT: approximately 88 – 96 (indicative equivalent).
- Duolingo English Test: approximately 115 – 120, accepted by a growing but still limited set of universities.

Planning to qualify as a solicitor in England & Wales?
Most Indian LLM graduates use the degree for corporate legal, in-house counsel or international law roles rather than for UK court practice. Those planning to qualify as a solicitor instead sit the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), which several universities now offer as an integrated LLM add-on.

An LLM alone doesn't grant Indian practising rights — you would still need to meet the Bar Council of India's requirements. Most Indian LLM graduates instead use the degree for corporate legal, in-house counsel, or international roles that don't require Indian court enrolment.
No — the SQE is only needed if you specifically want to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales after your LLM. Several universities offer it as an optional add-on to the standard one-year LLM.
