What Is a GIC and What It's Meant to Prove
A GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) is a secure, fixed-term deposit held with a participating Canadian bank or trust company. For study-permit purposes, it exists to show an officer that you have real, accessible funds set aside specifically for your first year of living costs in Canada — separate from tuition, which you prove separately through your DLI's fee receipt.
GIC vs Proof of Funds vs Tuition Payment
Three separate things typically sit in a funds-ready file: tuition proof (that you've paid at least the first year or semester per your DLI's offer), the GIC or equivalent bank evidence (living-cost funds for year one), and — since the Student Direct Stream ended — the wider proof-of-funds picture the regular stream also examines, meaning where all of this money came from and how long it's been held. A GIC is a strong, standardised way to satisfy the second of these, but it doesn't replace the source-and-seasoning story the rest of your file still has to tell.
How Much Is the Canada Study Permit GIC in 2026?
This is IRCC's own confirmed figure, not a third-party estimate: for study permit applications submitted on or after September 1, 2025, a single applicant applying outside Quebec must show CAD 22,895 in living-expense funds for the first year. This is checked directly against IRCC's official proof-of-financial-support page, last modified January 26, 2026 — the most current version of that page as of this writing. It replaced the earlier CAD 20,635 figure that applied to applications submitted between January 1, 2024 and August 31, 2025.

📌 Verified from Official Source
We've confirmed this amount directly from IRCC's official page as of August 2026. Since these figures can change yearly (usually in September), we recommend checking the official IRCC page before you apply to ensure you have the latest information.
Quebec: A Separate, Higher Requirement
Quebec does not use IRCC's table at all. It runs its own financial test through the Ministère de l'Immigration, de la Francisation et de l'Intégration (MIFI) as part of the Certificat d'acceptation du Québec (CAQ). As of January 1, 2026, a single applicant destined for Quebec must show CAD 24,617 to cover essential expenses for one year — CAD 1,722 more than the rest of Canada.

How the GIC Works: Deposit, Lock-In, Release
You wire the required amount — converted from INR at the prevailing rate — to your chosen bank before or alongside your study-permit application. The bank issues a GIC certificate confirming the funds are held. The money stays locked until you arrive in Canada, activate your account, and show proof of enrolment.
Initial Release After Arrival
Once you activate your account in Canada — in person at a branch, by mail, or through select banks' mobile apps — the bank releases an initial portion to help cover immediate costs.
Monthly Instalments Over Your First Year
The remaining balance, plus any interest earned, is paid out in monthly instalments over roughly 10 to 12 months rather than handed over as a lump sum. This is by design: it's meant to demonstrate ongoing, managed funds, not just an opening balance that could be spent immediately.
Which Banks Offer a Student GIC From India
Scotiabank, CIBC, SBI Canada Bank, ICICI Bank Canada, and RBC all have active, currently-live student GIC programs as of August 19, 2026, confirmed directly against each bank's own page. Simplii Financial runs the same underlying program as CIBC rather than being a separate sixth option — CIBC's own terms confirm its GIC Program Account is issued by Simplii Financial under the CIBC-branded offer, and that Simplii banking services aren't available in Quebec. This is not a ranked or endorsed list, and it isn't necessarily exhaustive — other banks may offer comparable programs — but every entry here is one we checked ourselves rather than copied from another site's list.
What to Check Before You Choose
- Whether the bank currently accepts applicants from India — confirm this directly on the bank's own program page, since eligible-country lists change
- The current fee structure — a service fee plus a wire-transfer fee are common, on top of the GIC principal (SBI Canada Bank's confirmed fees, for example, are a CAD 150 admin fee and a CAD 25 wire fee)
- Exactly how the payout is structured — an upfront-plus-instalments split, a fully flexible term, or a lump sum — varies by bank; confirm this directly with your chosen bank rather than assuming a single "monthly instalment" pattern applies everywhere
- Whether the bank's program operates in the province where you'll study (Simplii Financial, for example, is confirmed unavailable to Quebec-bound students per CIBC's own terms)
How to Open a GIC From India: Step by Step
Choose Your Bank and Register
Compare providers on fee, turnaround and eligibility, then register on the bank's official student GIC program page.
Wire the Funds
Transfer the required amount from an Indian bank account, following your bank's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) paperwork. Convert INR to CAD at the prevailing rate — the amount that lands should match the current requirement plus any bank fees, not fall short of it.
Receive Your GIC Certificate
Once the funds are confirmed, the bank issues your GIC certificate — typically within one to a few business days depending on the bank. In practice, the wire-transfer leg, not the bank's internal review, is usually where the real delay sits.
Include the Certificate With Your Study-Permit Application
Add the certificate to your IRCC application, or hold it as supporting proof-of-funds evidence (since it's not strictly mandatory outside the old SDS pathway), alongside your other financial documents.
GIC vs Education Loan vs Fixed Deposit vs Other Proof of Funds
A GIC is one path among several — bank statements, fixed deposits, a sanctioned education loan, or a mix of these, can also satisfy the funds requirement in the regular stream. A GIC's advantage is that it's a single, standardised document an officer recognises instantly; the trade-off is that it locks up a large sum in Canada rather than at home. A properly sanctioned education loan, with clear disbursement terms, is often just as strong evidence — sometimes stronger, because its origin is documented by design rather than assembled after the fact.
Why Source and Seasoning Still Matter With a GIC
Opening a GIC doesn't exempt the rest of your financial file from scrutiny. In the regular stream, IRCC still looks at where the money that funded the GIC — and any remaining balance shown elsewhere — came from, and how long it was held before the transfer. A GIC funded by an unexplained lump-sum deposit the week before you apply can still raise the same questions a bank-statement-only file would.
Common GIC Mistakes
Opening It Too Late for Your Intake
The wire-transfer leg from India, plus certificate issuance, can take longer than expected around peak intake periods — leave real buffer before your application deadline rather than assuming a same-week turnaround.
Treating the GIC as the Whole Financial Story
A GIC covers first-year living costs. It doesn't, on its own, address tuition proof or the broader source-of-funds picture the regular stream now expects — treat it as one component, not the complete answer.
Currency Conversion Errors
Converting INR to CAD at a rate other than your bank's applicable rate — or underestimating fees — can leave you short of the actual required amount. Confirm the exact CAD figure that will land before you initiate the transfer.
GIC Refunds If Your Study Permit Is Refused
If your application is refused, most banks will refund the GIC principal — plus any interest earned — back to the originating account, minus a processing or administrative fee and any wire-transfer charges. SBI Canada Bank's confirmed process is a useful concrete example: you submit a signed refund application with your self-attested refusal letter, and the bank deducts its CAD 150 admin fee (non-refundable) plus a CAD 25 wire-transfer fee from the refund, with processing taking up to four weeks. Other banks follow a broadly similar pattern — a refusal letter, account details, and a transfer receipt — but confirm the exact fees and timeline with your specific provider before you rely on this as a fallback plan.

A GIC proves living-cost funds, but it's only one document in a financial file that also has to show clean source and seasoning — exactly the area where regular-stream applications most often run into trouble. Not for most applicants. It was mandatory only under the Student Direct Stream, which ended in November 2024. In the regular stream, a GIC is optional but remains one of the clearest ways to prove living-cost funds.
CAD 22,895 for a single applicant outside Quebec, confirmed directly on IRCC's official page for applications submitted on or after September 1, 2025. It rises with each additional family member — see the full table earlier in this guide.

Scotiabank, CIBC, SBI Canada Bank, ICICI Bank Canada and RBC all had active, confirmed student GIC programs as of August 2026. Simplii Financial runs the same underlying program as CIBC, not a separate one, and per CIBC's own terms isn't available to Quebec-bound students.

No. A GIC only proves one part of your financial file — first-year living costs. IRCC still separately assesses fund source and seasoning, your study plan and your overall application.
